ABOUT US
Maryland Presbyterian Church is a congregation of the Presbyterian Church USA and a member of the Baltimore Presbytery.
The Church was chartered as a new church development in 1957 in
a wooded section of the Gunpowder River watershed, north of Towson, that was being developed as part of the post WW II suburban boom. The neighborhood is now a stable, residential enclave just north of the Baltimore Beltway (I 695) and very much part of the Baltimore metro area.
MPC enjoyed a robust ministry to families with a vibrant and well-known emphasis on social justice and outreach ministries throughout the early decades of its life. By the early 1990s, however, the congregation recognized that “the children had grown up and moved away” and it was time to “re-vision” its ministry for the new millennium.
Following an intensive 2 ˝ year process of
discernment and planning begun in 2002 we now organize our life and ministry around a set of core values that have reenergized the congregation. We enjoy regional and national
recognition for several of our core ministries.
Visitors and newcomers say they immediately recognize and appreciate the way our worship combines a deep spirituality with a progressive theological integrity along with our commitment to building a more just and peaceful world.
Our relatively small size (just over 100 members)
encourages and supports genuine caring as we grow together in our life as disciples of Jesus and in learning to approach the challenges of the 21st century in faith and hope.

ABOUT OUR LOGO
-

-
-
The MPC logo, finalized in 2006 is filled with symbolism. It develops a core labyrinth metaphor and is actually the foundation (seed and cross pattern) for the seven-circuit Cretan Labyrinth. Look at it closely. See that as followers of Christ we enter the journey of faith at a variety of places. The graphic is symbolic of the journey. It symbolizes that we are a community that welcomes the pilgrim, meets them where they are (the inclusive nature of our church), and invites them to walk on with us (growth).
- The colors represent the traditional liturgical year (green, red, purple, and gold instead of white (white doesn’t show up on a white background). It may also be interpreted as a toned-down rainbow, with all the symbolism of God’s faithfulness, grace and reconciliation (peacemaking). The colors of the earth (sun, flora, sky, sea) are apparent. The Roman cross at the heart of the graphic, roots our theology in the Good News of Christ. The corners of the graphic also look like people reaching outward (arms outspread) to the four corners of the earth in friendship, mission, ministry, service, peacemaking, and social justice.
-
- The logo has an element of flexibility which allows us to vary the colors to provide support and meaning for events during the year. For example, during environmental functions the colors brown and green, or green and blue are used.
-
- Perhaps the most obvious interpretation of the graphic is one of a cross/tree which implies growth through Christ. But, each one of us may see something in the logo which will provide personal meaning.
-
- What do you see in it?
-
- The logo was designed by Rev. Vicki Mykles, a graphic designer who lives in Colorado. Vicki is also a Presbyterian minister who graduated from the San Francisco Theological Seminary. After we sent her as much information about our church as possible, she said, “I love your progressive congregation and wish I could clone it for Colorado”. Vicki would send us samples of designs and we would ask her to adjust as we saw the need. The final design is a collaborative effort in many ways but the genius at its heart is Vicki’s.
